I just purchased Office Standard , and was impressed at the number of Online Templates that it appeared to be able to call upon. One of my requirements is to create rack diagrams for our server rooms, so I was very happy to see that there is a specific 'Rack Diagram' template. However, on opening it, I was confronted with an empty diagram, and no stencils listed in the Stencil pane at all.
It seems that many people have had the same symptoms which have been ascribed to various causes - but a question keeps coming up that I have yet to see a definitive answer to I will be very disappointed if I find that Visio tells me it is "Searching thousands of online templates" but most or all?
I don't want to waste my time trying to find a solution - if this behaviour is actually by design infuriating though that would be. And the things I've already tried? It is specifically online templates that seem not to work - local templates whether supplied with Visio, or downloaded from third parties all work OK. This thread is locked. Of the two conflicting replies so far - I find that George's is probably closest to the truth. On checking out the comparison document in his link - there are many Stencils that have no symbol at all against them under the 'Standard' column - I have tried loading a random sampling of these and found that after the "searching thousands of online templates" claim, a screen is presented that indicates a download size and a 'Create' button, but on clicking that button, they all open up with a blank document and no stencils Am I and dozens of others getting confused with hoodwinked by the terminology, and asking the wrong question?
Perhaps the template itself IS working - and it is the stencils that are not compatible with or available to the Standard version? But then again, isn't it the stencils with their predefined shapes that make a template worthwhile.
If this is the case, can someone just tell us where we can download the appropriate Microsoft stencils from, so that the templates actually provide any value? You do have an alternative to MS templates. You can google for alternative sources that do work with Std.
